King joined Shenita Baker, vice president and Mid South Growth Director at FNF Family of Companies and president-elect of the TNLTA, to address the growing threat of cyber fraud in the real estate industry. The Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) hosted the panel.
King and Baker highlighted the alarming rise in fraudulent schemes, such as wire transfer scams and seller impersonation fraud targeting vacant properties, which have caused billions in consumer losses nationwide. These sophisticated crimes impact individuals and the broader real estate industry.
“This issue hits close to home,” King said. “Cyber fraud has devastating effects on buyers, sellers and the entire industry. Protecting consumers isn’t just our responsibility—it’s our moral duty. By fostering awareness and collaboration, we can mitigate these threats and ensure safer transactions for all.”
The panel stressed the importance of collaboration among title agents, Realtors, lenders and consumers, along with educational initiatives to inform homebuyers and sellers. Baker shared real-world examples of fraud cases in Tennessee, underscoring the urgency for industry-wide action.
Carly Van Syckle, a TACIR representative, reflected on the discussion. “The real-life experience Tabitha and Shenita provided was insightful and helped commission members understand the extent of this issue and how it impacts Tennessee residents and beyond,” she said.
